Westchester County Archives Launches Latest Addition to its Virtual
Archives Web Site: "Historical Treasures of Westchester County"
The Westchester County Archives has launched the latest addition to its
Virtual Archives Web site located at
http://www.westchesterarchives.com/Home.html: "Historical Treasures of
Westchester County". The Web site is a collaborative effort of the
Westchester County Archives and the
Westchester County Historical Society.
The first installment of the Virtual Archives Web site project was "Westchester
County and the Civil War." That portion of the site documents life in
Westchester County during the American Civil War in the 1860s.
The Virtual Archives’ second installment provided the "Historic
American Engineering Record of the Bronx River Parkway Reservation."
That portion of the site documents the parkway’s beginnings, compiled by
the National Park Service, and includes a report of its origins as
America’s first public parkway and many historic photographs and
engineering drawings.
The third installment of the ongoing Virtual Archives project is a section
of the site that focuses on “Historical
Treasures of Westchester County.” Those interested in local history
will be thrilled with the first phase of what will be an ongoing expansion
of the third installment of the Virtual Archives project. Those interested
in Pelham history, however, will have to wait a little longer before
Pelham materials are included. Currently the site includes materials from
only five of the county's local communities: Ardsley, Eastchester, Port
Chester, Scarsdale and White Plains.
The new section of the Web site has a "Communities"
page where a visitor can use the cursor to hover over a town to see the
town's villages appear on the map. Those cities and towns for which
materials are included in the archive are marked with a gold diamond and
the collections for each may be accessed by clicking on the community's
name in the left column.
There truly are gems in the virtual collection. There is an image of a
broadside of the Declaration of Independence dated July 9, 1776. There
is an image of the
1776 Cochran Map of White Plains. There are images of the
1665 Eastchester Covenant. There are images of
Edward Pell's November 7, 1787 estate inventory.
The new section of the Web site is quite impressive and deserves a place
in the "Favorites" collection of every local history buff interested in
the history of Pelham and surrounding areas.
