Interesting Photographs from 1907 Program for Pelham's Fourth of July Celebration

The printed program for the Town of Pelham's extravagant Fourth of July celebration in 1907 provides a fascinating glimpse of life in the Town early in the 20th Century. The program includes several interesting photographs of scenes around town several of which are well known. Two of the photographs, however, are rare views of the Town. Thus, today's Historic Pelham Blog Posting reproduces the cover of the program as well as two of the rare views contained in that program.

The image above shows the cover of the program for the July 4th Celebration. It seems that such programs were printed for a number of July 4th Celebrations early in the 20th century. One for the 1910 celebration is known to exist.

Within the program is a fascinating photograph of what is described as the United States Post Office in Pelham. The photograph shows an unusual view of a portion of Seth T. Lyman's drugstore and post office located at One Fifth Avenue. That image appears immediately above. The building still stands today at that location. The photograph is unusual because most known photographs of the building are taken from a distance to show the entire building and do not show the architecture of the post office portion of the structure very well. The photograph shows an unpaved street with a step leading up to a sidewalk in front of the structure. The original windows and the door at the entrance to the post office are plainly visible.

Another photograph that appears in the program shows the "Inter-Urban Waterworks at North Pelham". That photograph appears immediately above. In the distance is a lovely "waterfall". On the right is the main pump house at the site. Most known images of this area are post card views containing photographs taken from a distance to show the entire reservoir complex. This unusual image is more of a "close up" of portions of the complex.
