Image of an Ornamental Pot Reportedly Found in Pelham in the 19th
Century in a Native American Grave
Thomas Scharf was the editor of a two-volume History of Westchester
County published in 1886. Chapter II dealt with the Indians of Westchester
County. In that chapter, Scharf included images of a number of Native
American artifacts illustrative of those discovered in various parts of
the County.
Among those images was one that appeared above a caption that read
"ORNAMENTAL POTTERY. Found in Pelham in Indian grave." The image shows an
ornate and lovely pot decorated with a complex pattern. The image of that
pot appears immediately below.
