Today's posting, about William Jay Bolton of Pelham, is the 700th item published to the Historic Pelham Blog since its founding nearly three years ago.

William Jay Bolton was a son of Robert Bolton who built Bolton Priory in 1838 and founded Christ Church shortly afterward in Pelham. William Jay Bolton executed the "Adoration of the Magi" stained glass window in Christ Church. It is believed to be the first figured stained glass window created in the United States.

In 1898, Gonville and Caius College released a multi-volume "Biographical History" of the 500-year-old college with information about "all known members of the college" from 1349 to 1897. Among those included in the volume was William Jay Bolton. His biographical entry is transcribed below.

"Bolton, William Jay: son of Rev. Robert Bolton, of the Episcopal Church, U.S. Born at Bath. Educated at Mill Hill, Middx. Admitted fellow-commoner, June 28, 1849. Age 32.

B.A. 1853: M.A. 1856. College exhibition, 1850, for moral philosophy. Hulsean Prize, 1852. Ordained deacon (Ely) 1853: priest (do.) 1854. Curate in Cambridge, Cheltenham, Brighton, and Islington. Vicar of St. John, Stratford, 1866-81. Vicar of St. James, Bath, 1881-4. Died at Bath, May 28, 1884. Author: Evidences of Christianity, 1853 (prize). Fireside Preaching, 1856; &c."
