Thomas Pell and the Legend of the Pell Treaty Oak is a meticulously-researched and well-documented work about a man who has been described as a "swashbuckling soldier of fortune" -- Thomas Pell -- and the legend of the "Treaty Oak" that bore his name.  Beneath that oak, on June 27, 1654, Pell acquired from local Native Americans the lands that became the Manor of Pelham comprising much of today's northeastern Bronx and lower Westchester County.

Memories have faded and the mists of time have obscured the story of Thomas Pell and the Pell Treaty Oak.  Thomas Pell and the Legend of the Pell Treaty Oak is an effort to part the mists and document the story in honor of the 350th anniversary celebration of Pelham, New York.

Blake A. Bell, author of the book, is Deputy Historian of Pelham, New York.  He also serves as Village Historian of the Village of Pelham, one of the two villages that comprise the Town of Pelham.  He is the author and publisher of this Web site and has published nearly two dozen articles on the history of Pelham and surrounding areas.  He recently has been asked to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Westchester County Historical Society.

Thomas Pell and the Legend of the Pell Treaty Oak contains twenty three black and white engravings, illustrations, maps and photographs.  There are more than ninety endnotes detailing sources on which the author relied in preparing the text.  The Table of Contents appears below.
