Pelham Manor's development was even more dramatic in the next decade. In 1666 Pell received a patent from the Royal Governor of the Colony of New York formally granting the land to him as a 'Lordshipp and Manour' by the English king. Pell named his manor 'Pelham' in honor of his tutor, Pelham Burton. What Pell paid the Indians for this land, some 50,000 acres, is not recorded. Pell began building a manor house, but never lived on the land he purchased and died in Fairfield in 1669. Drawing of Thomas Pell is by Thom Lafferty from an original by an unknown artist."

Sir John provided protection and refuge for the Indian chief Wampage and his family, who lived on Pell's Neck and Hunter Island, and negotiated treaties between the Indians and the English that kept Westchester free from the Indian wars that ravaged New England. Sir John's son, Thomas, married Wampage's granddaughter, Anna, a union that solidified the Pell claim to the land. Until the Revolution, only the Pell family lived in Pelham."

The photo is from 1890. Mrs. Secor and Mrs. Robert C. Black were the social leaders of the Village in the late 1800's and early decades of this century. Julius Manger, owner fo the Manger hotel chain, purchased the Secor residence in the 1920's. The grounds of this huge property along the Post Road and Wolfs Lane became the unofficial Village playground for football and baseball through the 20's and 30's, thanks to the generosity and understanding of the Manger family. One of the Manger properties in New York City was the Manger Hotel at 51st Street and Seventh Avenue (later the Taft Hotel and now the Parc 51 Hotel). In 1927, rooms at the Manger Hotel were priced at $2.50 to $4.00 per day for one, $3.50 to $6.00 per day for two, and special luncheons at the hotel's 'beautiful Moorish Grill, with music by Cass Hagan and is orchestra' ranged from 80 cents to one dollar. Present homes on Manger Circle, developed in the 1950's, stand on what was the Secor-Manger estate."

Notes: The Highbrook Avenue School, around the beginning of the 20th Century, was located on the site of today's Colonial School.  According to material prepared by the Village of Pelham, "the building consisted of four rooms with a 'very noisy' wooden staircase - so loud that teaching ceased when students went out for recess.  It was replaced by another school that was later torn down because it proved to be a fire hazard.  In 1926, a temporary annex was set up at Boulevard and Cliff while the present school building [the Colonial School] was constructed at the same location as the old school."

Notes:  "Founded in 1896, this Catholic parish is celebrating its centennial year [written in 1996].  Remarkably, in its one hundred year history, there have been only five pastors.  St. Catherine's Lyceum was built in 1903 as a recreation and meeting place.  Later it served as a parish school until construction began in 1939 on the present building (now called the "Msgr. Murphy Parish Center").  The present Rectory was completed in 1968.  St. Catharine's also had property and buildings donated by William T. Grant, the dime store chain founder, located on Boston Post Road where it had a mission church.  In 1954 it was established as a parish of its own under the title of Our Lady of Perpetual Help."

Notes: "Located near the railroad arch over the Hutchinson River close to First Street, the reservoir was part of the old New York Inter Urban Water Company. It was used by local residents for swimniing, fishing and as a skating pond. A lagoon that was part of the reservoir was filled in during construction of the scenic Hutchinson River Parkway. Today only Pelham Lake remains from the original body of water."
