During the last 110 years there have been countless views of Pelham depicted on postcards.  Pelham, of course, is not unique in this regard.  The last decade of the 19th Century and the first decade of the 20th Century are considered by many to have been the "golden years" of postcards.  Many postcards of that era depict views of Pelham that no longer exist and that suggest a simpler time.  Many dozens of such postcards are catalogued below, with each catalog entry linked to images of the obverse and reverse of each card.

Generally, the sorts of postcards referenced below are known by postcard collectors as "views".  Small town "views" are among the most popular category of postcard collectibles.  When a "view" postcard also appeals to collectors of so-called "topicals" -- i.e., postcards that relate to a particular topic such as trolleys, depots, banks, busy main streets, etc. -- the postcard is of interest to more collectors.

"View" postcards relate to a simpler time.  Representatives of the publishers of such cards periodically fanned out across the country to take photographs of the principal street scenes, buildings, schools, churches and statues in each of hundreds of communities.  On subsequent return trips, the representatives would bring the photographs and printing proofs.  Local merchants such as drugstore owners would place orders for copies of the postcards that could then be sold to local retail customers.  To view what appears to be an example of one such proof showing Pelham Memorial High School, click here.  In many instances, photographs printed on the cards were "retouched" to remove power lines and other such items to provide a more idealistic view of the scene.

There seem to have been at least twenty companies that published postcards with views of Pelham for sale to the public.  They include The American News Company (New York, Leipzig, Dresden); Artino Post Cards (New York City); The Collotype Co. (Elizabeth, N.J. and N.Y.); Color Post Card Company (141 W. 33rd St., N.Y.); Colourpicture Publishers, Inc. (Boston 30, Mass., USA); The Eagle Post Card Co. (New York); The Ess and Ess Photo Co. (19 E. 17th St., New York, N.Y.);  Frank Horton (Germany); The Greeting Card Mfg. Co., Inc. (32 Union Square, N.Y.); Independent Photo Card Co. (New York City); Lumitone Photoprint (New York); Nyce Manufacturing Co. (Vernfield, Pa.); The Pictorial News Co., New York; S.K. Simon (226-242 William St., N.Y.); The Tecraft Company (Tenafly, N.J.); The Union News Company (New York); The Valentine & Sons' Publishing Co., Ltd. (New York); Von Hardenberg Co. Litho (116 W. 27th St. N.Y.); W.F. Sleight Post-Card Co. (Mount Vernon, N.Y.); W.W. Carter, Publisher (70-5th Ave., New York).

Thanks to good old-fashioned American capitalism, the efforts of companies such as these recorded historical views of The Pelhams and surrounding areas for the benefit of future generations.
